PAPAR: The Sabah Forestry Department has set a Malaysia Book of Records for the most number of nations participating in a tree planting event.

The achievement took place at the International Friendship Garden in the Kawang forest reserve yesterday.

Delegates representing 44 nations from around the world, participating in the 26th Miss Tourism International 2023, engaged in the tree planting activities.

The crowning ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Sabah International Convention Centre on Nov 25, 2023.

"We are thrilled to have accomplished this remarkable milestone in our tree planting event," said Sabah Chief Conservator of Forests, Datuk Frederick Kugan.

"This event signifies our commitment to Sabah's goal of having 40 million trees planted by 2025 campaign and showcases the collective efforts of nations worldwide in addressing climate change and preserving our natural resources," he added.

The event aimed to promote international cooperation and friendship while addressing the global challenge of deforestation, he said.

Sabah has not only made history but has also drawn global attention to the importance of reforestation efforts and environmental conservation, he said.

The delegates' presence in Sabah not only fostered cultural exchange but also demonstrated their commitment to environmental sustainability.

The collaboration between the Sabah Forest Department and the delegates aimed to raise awareness about the pressing need to restore and conserve our forests.

The 'Sabah 40 million Trees to be Planted in 2025' campaign is a pioneering initiative by the Sabah Forestry Department to combat deforestation and mitigate the effects of climate change.
