KUALA LUMPUR: There are currently no officers from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) stationed at the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra), the graft busters said today.

The commission, in a statement today, said MACC officers are prohibited from participating in any board meeting, committee or secretariat relating to the procurement of external agencies.

"This is in line with Treasury Circular 1 (1PP)," read the statement.

The commission was responding to news reports, which quoted Mitra special committee chairman Datuk R. Ramanan as saying that the unit will be having MACC officers in its meetings as preventive measures to prevent incidents of misappropriation of funds.

On a related matter, the MACC reiterated that the commission has completed investigations into misappropriation of Mitra funds from 2019 until 2021.

"Following that, the MACC has prosecuted 12 cases with 10 of them being tried in court and two accused have pleaded guilty.

"MACC has also reviewed the management of Mitra funds to enhance its procedures and transparency in the distribution of funds to the Indian community in this country.

"In addition, Mitra has submitted a report on Advisory Practice, Systems and Fund Management Procedures to the National Unity Ministry on Feb 22 last year," the commission said, adding that the report serves as a measure and tools to prevent corruption, abuse of power and misappropriation of government funds.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki on Tuesday confirmed that the investigation involving misappropriation of Mitra funds has concluded with all the people involved charged by the court.

Azam Baki had said that the MACC had also advised Mitra on the needed improvements in management and distribution of their funds.

"The case is considered closed with all people charged, for now," Azam was quoted as saying.
