KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia should establish a direct and strategic relationship with Hamas in order to ascertain the Palestinians' requirements prior to proposing solutions or calling for a ceasefire, given that the freedom fighters are the ones engaged in the conflict, says Gabungan Solidariti Pembebasan Palestin (GSPP).

GSPP chairman Muhammad Fauzi Asmuni said the government should suggest any solutions that are out of Hamas' consideration.

"We are not there so we may suggest (solutions or considerations) that are not what they need.

"For instance, issuing a ceasefire request. If it fulfils their requirements, that is acceptable. Ceasefires may appear to be a life-saving measure from our perspective, but those on their end, cognisant of the Jewish people's conduct, will merely gain additional time.

"These are some of the things that we should engage directly with Hamas for us to suggest more appropriate solutions," he said in the group's press conference which involved more than 50 humanitarian NGOs.

Fauzi said that Malaysia should base their decisions on the needs of Hamas and Palestinians instead of echoing the United Nations or the United States.

The group has voiced nine demands for the government to help those in Gaza. This includes continuing the policy of no diplomatic relations with Israel, not meeting the demands or pressure to normalise any form of relations with Israel and continuing to support the GSPP and the Palestinian.

They have also called for the government to not recognise the two-state solution and reject the Deal of the Century plan that would lead to the construction of Greater Israel.

They also called for the government to not be in favour of the western bloc such as the United States, Britain, France and other countries that support genocide.

The government, they said, should not succumb to the pressure of the Pro-Israel bloc that tried to prevent any form of manifestation of solidarity between the government and Malaysia to the issue of freeing Palestinians.

They said the government also needed to ensure that all donations were transparently delivered to the oppressed Palestinian people of Gaza and not to the Palestinian Authority who had an agreement with Israel.

They said the government should be lobbying and influencing other Islamic countries and international bodies on its stance related to the Palestinian by ensuring that any future agreement must involve the GSPP and not a body that did not represent the majority of the Palestinians.

They have also called for Malaysians to donate more to Palestinians especially with winter approaching.

Through Aman Palestin, GSPP has donated about RM500,000 to Gaza and will be channelling RM2.5 million to Hospital Al Shifa.
