IPOH: A Malayan tiger met a tragic end, believed to have been struck by a heavy vehicle near the Gua Tempurung rest area on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) in Gopeng.
The adult tiger was discovered lying dead in the middle of the highway barrier, indicating that it was likely struck while crossing the highway.
Perak Science, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman Teh Kok Lim said that based on the initial information received, the discovery of the adult male tiger's carcass, estimated to be eight to 10 years old, was reported to the PLUS management at about 12.30am last night.
He said the tiger's carcass had already been relocated to the National Wildlife Rescue Centre (NWRC) for further action.
Perak Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia Department director Yusoff Shariff, when contacted, confirmed the discovery of the tiger's carcass and informed that the headquarters would issue an official statement regarding the incident.
Previously, Yusoff had confirmed the sighting of a Malayan tiger in Kampung Sahom, Kampar, since Oct 22.
The location of the dead tiger found on the highway last night is near Kampung Sahom.
He had previously suggested that the appearance of the tiger in Kampung Sahom might have been due to its straying while searching for food, as the wild boar population in the area had decreased due to the African swine fever outbreak.
