KUALA LUMPUR: Former federal police Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd did not commit any wrongdoing when A$320,000 (now worth RM957,488) was transferred into Commonwealth Bank of Australia account.

According to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reforms) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, an internal investigation conducted by the force's Integrity and Standard Compliance Department found that the money was obtained from the sale of property on April 26, 2016.

This, she said, had already been declared by Wan Najmuddin on Feb 11, 2000.

Azalina said this in a written response to a question from Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong), who had asked why no legal action was taken against Wan Najmuddin after the seizure of A$320,000 of his funds by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in 2018.

In 2018, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) initiated an investigation into the funds in question.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the Australian police froze the funds which was said to have been transferred into the account in 2016 without complying with Australian law.

The then inspector-general of police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun had said Bukit Aman had been informed about the existence of the account, and the Integrity and Standard Compliance Department had conducted an internal investigation and cleared Wan Najmuddin of any misconduct.
