KUALA LUMPUR: The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) should be given more power to control state water supply agencies, said Kota Melaka member of Parliament Khoo Poay Tiong.

He said the water supply management agencies in the state were left unchecked as SPAN was not given sufficient powers to control the state agencies.

He cited an example of Syarikat Air Melaka Bhd (SAMB) where it charges RM250 for water supply connections even though SPAN has warned that it was against the law.

For Air Selangor, he said the agency made an error for missing out on certain premises that will be affected by water supply disruption due to the maintenance and replacement works in Sungai Langat Water Treatment Plant.

He said tourists from overseas who stayed at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur were also affected by the water disruption and the hotel could not prepare for the situation as it was not among the affected areas.

"Imagine one whole day with no water.

"I had to use mineral water to wash my teeth and face only.

"Originally, Air Selangor said the works will be completed by noon today, but now it says tomorrow 6am.

"This is why I said there should have someone to control them," he said when debating amendment to SPAN bill today.

The amendment to the bill was tabled for second reading at Dewan Rakyat today.
