KUALA LUMPUR: The Auditor General has recommended four actions that need to be taken regarding the financial position of the federal government last year.

Auditor General Datuk Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi said the federal government is advised to enhance governance in managing public expenditure, in addition to intensifying efforts towards the effectiveness of expenditure management.

"Secondly, improvements should be made in the management of public debt in terms of debt capacity and debt sustainability, including the government guarantee management. This is to reduce fiscal risks, especially in situations of uncertainty in the future," she said in the Auditor General's report for 2022 that was released today.

She said thirdly, ongoing monitoring needs to be implemented by the ministries' secretary-generals and department heads on the work carried out by officials, including providing training to enhance their competencies.

"Lastly, the effectiveness of the internal audit unit (UAD) in ministries and departments must be improved.

"This includes ensuring that UAD personnel receive training and adequate guidance; to provide an annual audit plan so that the auditing can be carried out according to priority; making objective judgements not only related to aspects of internal control but also the risk and governance of the organisation as well as to report significant findings and to give recommendations that can give impact on the organisation."
