JOHOR BARU: The state Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry is investigating a complaint of overcharging by a seafood restaurant here, after a customer claimed that she was charged RM1,260 for her family's dinner.

State director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo said action was taken under Section 12 of the Consumer Protection Act, for misleading pricing.

She said the premises were also given a notice under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act (AKHAP) 2011 to provide information for price calculation.

"Authorities have monitored the prices and operation of the restaurant and have taken appropriate action. However, the case is still under investigation," she said when contacted.

Yesterday, it was reported that Ekin Rahmat, the wife of singer and radio host Mawi, was unhappy with the prices charged by a seafood restaurant.

The bill for her family, consisting of 12 adults and six children, came up to RM1,260.

Ekin, whose real name is Nora'Asikin Rahmat said she only ordered two medium-sized fish and some seafood dishes but was surprised when she saw the bill.

She also claimed that the shop did not display the prices, only stating that they were following the market price.

Yesterday, the restaurant owner came forward to explain the matter.

In a video uploaded on social media, the owner explained each charge imposed on Ekin and stated that about 20 of her family members visited the restaurant.

She said some of the dishes ordered by Ekin and her family included grilled stingray, three-flavored seabass, steamed seabass, butter prawns, deep-fried squid, salted egg crab and chili crab.

"I am the owner of stall number 14. The purpose of this video is to provide clarification regarding the video uploaded on social media. If it is still unclear, you can come and meet me," she said.
