PETALING JAYA: In an effort to raise awareness about mental health issues, OHBULAN! has launched its mental health awareness campaign called 'Besties, Pape Roger'.

The campaign, in collaboration with Mental Illness Awareness and Support Association (MIASA) and TikTok Malaysia, will run for one month. It will coincide with the celebration of 'World Mental Health Day' on Oct 10.

MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES A RISING CONCERN

Former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin revealed that the number of calls received through the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services (MHPSS), an initiative under the National Centre of Excellence for Mental Health, recorded a five-fold increase in 2022 compared to 2020.

"In 2020, 44,061 calls were received under MHPSS. The number of calls received increased by five times to 212,319 the following year," he said.

The National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2015 revealed that one in three Malaysians aged 16 and above faced challenges concerning mental health.

In 2019, the health ministry reported that 2.3 per cent of adults and 9.5 per cent of children aged 10 to 15 years experienced mental health problems, with the prediction that the figure would continue to rise.

By partnering with MIASA, the 'Besties, Pape Roger' campaign aims to offer precise insights into the fundamentals of mental illness, such as the types of conditions, associated risk factors and ways to manage the condition.

The campaign also strives to challenge the stigma and debunk the stereotypes surrounding mental health to foster a more empathetic atmosphere and holistic wellbeing.

Leveraging the strength of OHBULAN! as one of Malaysia's leading digital platforms, the editorial team interviewed prominent local celebrities to share their experiences in dealing with mental health issues.

Campaign manager for 'Besties, Pape Roger' and content writer at OHBULAN! Azyan Shorlokman, said: "The editorial team is delighted that many celebrities and well-known influencers have come forward to share their personal experiences.

"Among them are Nadia Brian, Zynakal, Sharifah Sakinah, Shuhada Shukri and Ayu from Hot FM."

Besides articles, videos and social media content, OHBULAN! is also providing an exclusive platform for the public to vent their feelings and thoughts anonymously without fear of receiving judgment.

Azyan said it is important for the public to know that mental illness can affect anyone, and they should not be ashamed to seek help.

MIASA's founder and president Anita Abu Bakar, said: "All mental illnesses have the potential for recovery, but they require a comprehensive approach and consistent treatment over time because symptoms often recur. Therefore, each individual requires varying durations to recover."

She added that it is not easy for individuals to accept a mental illness diagnosis because it comes with misconceptions and negative labels.

TikTok Malaysia's head of operations and marketing Hooi Yin Yin said: "Change begins with a dialogue. The 'Besties, Pape Roger' campaign is rooted in the belief that frank, empathetic conversations between individuals can break unnecessary stigmas around mental health and wellbeing.

"When we encourage honest conversations, we empower individuals to share their experiences, learn from one another, and seek help, paving the way for healthier, safer and more resilient communities."

REV Media Group's head of Malay network Noraniza Azmi, added: "The issue of mental health is like a taboo topic among Malaysians, and many are still hesitant or unsure about how to seek appropriate help.

"Therefore, we hope this initiative can assist individuals experiencing mental illnesses in finding a path to resolution.

"Additionally, the 'Besties, Pape Roger' campaign aims to encourage the community to understand individuals facing mental health challenges through audience-friendly and easily accessible content."
