PONTIAN: A 42-year-old man was killed while four passengers were injured when the car they were traveling in crashed onto a Mercedes-Benz along Jalan Tanjung Bin, near here, last night.

Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Mohd Hasnan Abd Rahman said the head-on collision occurred at 9.02 pm.

Pontian district police chief Superintendent Mohamad Shofee Tayib said preliminary investigations at the scene revealed that both vehicles arrived at an intersection from different directions, and there were no "Stop" signs or road markings present at the intersection.

"A Honda CRV was traveling from the direction of Tanjung Bin towards Permas town, while a Mercedes Benz was coming from Lorong Hj Sakyon towards Sakyon Darat. Due to the absence of signage at the intersection, the two vehicles collided on the right side of the respective vehicles," he said.

The Mercedes-Benz driver was helped out of his car by passers-by, while the firemen extricated the five victims including the driver in the Honda CRV.

Mohd Hasnan said the 42-year-old driver identified as Vun Tat Shin who was pinned in the seat, was pronounced dead by medical assistants at the scene, while the remaining four victims sustained severe injuries.

The injured victims -two men aged 43, and 39, and two women, 36 and 40, were rushed to the hospital.

It took eight firemen to complete the rescue mission and clear the roads of debris for the safety of other road-users.

The operation was completed at 11.43pm

The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987.
