KUALA LUMPUR: DAP believes that the Attorney-General, Tan Sri Idris Harun, should provide an open explanation following the decision of the Kuala Lumpur High Court to discharge Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi from 47 charges against him without acquittal.

DAP secretary-general, Anthony Loke, stated that this explanation is crucial in light of various opinions on the decision from different quarters.

"DAP acknowledges the critical views from various parties and the public regarding the Kuala Lumpur High Court's decision to discharge, but not acquit, 47 cases involving Ahmad Zahid. DAP also respects the court's process and decision but in the interest of justice and accountability, Attorney-General Tan Sri Idris Harun should provide an open explanation for the factors leading to this decision," he said through his official Facebook account today.

Yesterday, Judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah discharged Ahmad Zahid, 70, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, after allowing deputy public prosecutor Datuk Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar's application, stating that the Attorney-General's office wanted to halt all proceedings against him at this stage.

Ahmad Zahid faced 47 charges related to misappropriation of funds, corruption, and illegal money transfers involving the Yayasan Akalbudi foundation he established.

Loke mentioned that they were aware of the prosecution's application to terminate the proceedings temporarily for a more detailed investigation, which was the prerogative of the Attorney-General and decided by the court. However, he emphasised that an explanation regarding the decision is important to ensure public confidence and international trust in the country's legal system is maintained.

"DAP always upholds the principle of the separation of powers between the judiciary, executive and legislative branches, ensuring that there is no executive interference in any court case," he added.
