KUALA LUMPUR: An elderly couple and their 35-year-old disabled child who were forced to move out of their long rented home, now have a new place to live thanks to Deputy Finance Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong's efforts.

On Sim's Twitter account today, he related how Uncle Chu, 85, and his wife, Ah Hua, 75, had suddenly been informed by their landlord that their tenancy would not be extended.

"Uncle has been living in that old house for over 70 years, making it emotionally challenging and financially burdensome to move.

"His retirement savings have long dried up," Sim tweeted.

Sim said he had initially proposed renovating and repairing the house on the condition that Uncle Chu and his family could continue staying there.

Unfortunately, the landlord rejected the proposal, forcing Uncle Chu to move out.

"Luckily, the Penang state government has a housing programme for the poor."

Sim further tweeted that he contacted state Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo and requested a house for Uncle Chu.

"Jagdeep immediately said yes," he said.

Sim also reached out to Kak Ina, an individual he had previously helped to upgrade her flower delivery van.

According to Sim, she readily agreed to help Uncle Chu and his family by offering her services and van for free.

"With Kak Ina and her husband's help, the family's belongings were safely transferred to their new residence.

"Kak Ina also informed me that her income is now over RM4,000 per month.

"It used to be a struggle for her to earn even RM800. Now she wants to help others," Sim tweeted.

He said Uncle Chu and his family are profoundly grateful for the support received and they are now happy to have a new home.

"Now, he and his family can live comfortably after the worries and hardships they faced when they were evicted from the rented house." he added.

Sim has garnered praise and admiration from netizens, who were deeply moved by his efforts to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

"Keep it going. Everyone who's struggling needs a bit of help," said one netizen, who is an islander.

"You're the best, bro. Salute!" exclaimed Faizal Rahman, expressing his admiration for Sim's dedication and empathetic approach to helping others.

Another voice of appreciation was Karl, who commented, "Nice work, YB!! Appreciate it so much."
