KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says the late National Dakwah Council (MDN) chairman and Islamic scholar Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Mahmood Zuhdi Abd Majid is irreplaceable.

According to Anwar, as MDN chairman the late scholar managed to empower the spread of Islamic teachings and presented profound thoughts and ideas touching on social and economic aspects as well as current issues.

In a Facebook post today, Anwar also expressed his condolences to the family of Mahmood Zuhdi, 78, who breathed his last at 10.20pm yesterday at his residence in Section 11, Petaling Jaya, due to lung cancer.

"May the spirit of the deceased be placed among those who believe and do righteous deeds," said Anwar.

Mahmood Zuhdi was laid to rest at the Bukit Kiara Muslim Cemetery, near here at 11.30 am today.

Throughout his lifetime, the scholar and preacher held various key positions including the University of Malaya (UM) Syariah Faculty dean, UM Islamic Studies Academy director and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) member.

The Kota Baru, Kelantan native received a master's degree from Al-Azhar University, Egypt and a doctorate from UM and served as the dean of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences Faculty at the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) as well as Public Bank Syariah committee chairman.

He was also the recipient of the national-level Maulidur Rasul Award in 2010. -- Bernama
