LONDON: The distance between the Kuantan's Penor Prison and Westminster Abbey in London spans almost 10,600 kilometres.

Today, however, the two locations share a common thread.

This is because the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah's outfit for the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla today were crafted by none other than the inmates of the Penor Prison.

The dazzling yellow 'tenun' modern kurung, designed by Tunku Azizah herself, was initially created to be worn by her during Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah's coronation as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 2019.

It was however deemed unsuitable for the event, following the passing of Sultan Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah in May the same year.

Tunku Azizah told the New Straits Times that the outfit has so far been limited to official photo sessions.

"I have never worn this (for official occasions)," she said prior to departing for Westminster Abbey.

Tunku Azizah has been a longtime proponent of the Royal Pahang weave, which are created by inmates of the Penor and Bentong prisons in Pahang.

The inmates hone their skills at weaving and crafting the fine textile pieces, many of which have gone for exhibitions worldwide.

Al-Sultan Abdullah, meanwhile, looked resplendent in his number one ceremonial army dress for the event.

The event is also a significant one for Al-Sultan Abdullah as the new British monarch is a longtime friend from their Sandhurst and polo-playing days.

Al-Sultan Abdullah and Tunku Azizah are the first Malaysian monarchs to attend a royal coronation in the United Kingdom in 70 years.

Four Malayan sultans had attended the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

The coronation procession for King Charles III and Queen Camilla from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey will also feature 12 members of the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment, who marched along with armed forces personnel from 38 Commonwealth countries.
