KUALA LUMPUR: Efforts to address mental health issues among Malaysians should have been outlined clearly in the recent 2023 Budget announcement, said Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

The Alliance for Safe Community chairman said the ample budgetary allocations should focus on mental health, including the promotion of mental wellbeing, prevention of mental disorders and suicide, treatment and rehabilitation.

"More efforts are required to connect with individuals without Internet access, older generations, those living in rural regions and the homeless.

"To enable quick access to therapy and prevent problems from getting worse, subsidies should be granted to people who are financially disadvantaged to obtain treatment in a private setting."

He lauded the Health Ministry for putting in place excellent programmes to support Malaysians' mental health.

"The 'Let's TALK' campaign launched by the ministry has raised awareness about the importance of mental health among Malaysians as well.

"However, I hope the National Centre of Excellence for Mental Health's (15555) HEAL hotline, which offers a 24-hour emotional support helpline, will expand its hours of operation to deal with the heavy call demand."

He added that the ministry should devise ways to retain skills for mental health specialists such as psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, counsellors and social workers.

"Other than reactivating the National Suicide Registry Malaysia (NSRM), we should consider improving mental health services for people who attempt suicide.

"The wellbeing of employees depends critically on creating a secure and mentally healthy work environment."
