KOTA TINGGI: Former Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has been appointed as the new Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) chairman.

The matter was confirmed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister.

"He has been appointed, there are no more rumours. I presented the letter to him on Friday," said Zahid in a press conference after a visit to the South East Johor Development Authority (Kejora), here, today.

Also present were Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, Johor State Secretary Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani and Kejora general manager Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus.

Earlier, Zahid was asked to comment on a picture of him presenting a letter to Asyraf that went viral on Twitter.

"Because it is not a political news, so it is true," he said.

The picture, which was uploaded by a Twitter user yesterday, drew uneasy reactions from the people who questioned the appointment of the former deputy minister in the prime minister's department (Islamic Affairs).

The previous Mara chairman was Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun.

Yesterday, Asyraf was seen updating his resume on Facebook and said that he was looking for a job,

He did not defend his post in this year's Umno election.
