KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim extended his condolences to the family of the late International Islamic University of Malaysia (UIAM) former rector, Emeritus Professor Tan Sri Dr Mohd Kamal Hassan following his passing today.

He said the late Mohd Kamal, who was also former Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) chairman, was a key figure among Islamic thinkers who had contributed greatly to the world of academia, research, education and human capital development.

"This loss has left deep scars on the hearts of the people.

"I offer my condolences to the family and pray for the soul of the deceased to be placed among the righteous," said Anwar in a Facebook post today.

Mohd Kamal died at 2.27am today at the age of 80 due to complications related to a recent surgical procedure.
