KUALA LUMPUR: Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the Chinese community is no stranger to him in celebration of the Lunar New Year yesterday (Jan 22).

In a Facebook post yesterday, Hadi shared several photos of him and his family members clad in red, saying his grandfather had adopted children from the Chinese community whether they reverted to Islam or otherwise.

"During the Second World War, there were Chinese refugees who arrived at the east coast.

"My grandfather was able to save the Chinese refugees and hid them at his farm. At the time, he was the village head,"

"They (the adopted Chinese refugees) became part of my family," he wrote on Sunday.

Hadi also said one of his daughter-in-law is Chinese, proving that his family's relationship with the community is not new.

"After welcoming the Chinese New Year Celebration in Kuala Lumpur with the Perikatan Nasional and Gerakan party leadership this morning, I went back to Kampung Rusila to celebrate the festivities with my family.

"This festivity can be one of the ways for us to strengthen unity and friendship among the different ethnics and races in Malaysia," he said.
