KUALA LUMPUR: The Russian couple who climbed to the top of Merdeka 118 Tower illegally said they have left Malaysia.

In an Instagram post today, Ivan Beerkus said he and Angela Nikolau had entered Malaysia legally.

"Don't waste the country's budget on searching for us in Malaysia. We are no longer there.

"We legally visited Malaysia," he said.

He shared that they had developed a solid plan before their adventure up the world's second tallest building.

"Our preparation for the climb took a lot of days. The building had heightened security measures and we had to develop a solid plan that we won't be able to reveal to you.

"We were waiting out in a tiny hideout for 20+ hours inside Merdeka 118, running out of water and food, unable to use the restroom, stretch our legs, or breathe amidst all the construction dust.

"For me and Angela every climb is a way to overcome ourselves and our abilities. And every frame is a way to share our emotions and passion with people. I'm grateful to the people who feel it."

It was reported that the Immigration Department revealed that there was no record of Beerkus and Nikolau exiting or entering the country, and the department is still investigating the matter.
