JAKARTA: All ministers will next week table to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim their respective performances.

They will also be tabling the work they had done for their respective portfolios, which they had assumed less than two months ago, at a retreat for members of the unity government.

An announcement of each of their performances will then be made.

Anwar did not elaborate the course of action to be taken if any performance is subpar.

"The general key performance indicator (KPI) for them is there, and it is about doing the best they can.

"Their allowances were slashed and there the message is clear that there should be no new expenditures, but rather they should only utilise the existing budget.

"Some say these sums saved are miniscule, but there is a huge underlying message here — when there is accountability at the ministers' level, the rest should follow suit."

Anwar told the Malaysian diaspora in Indonesia on the first night of his working visit to Indonesia that the directive for prudent spending remained and that other than expenditure that had not been planned for, would only be on a "need to" basis.

Earlier, after witnessing the handing over of nine memoranda of understanding between Malaysian companies and 11 letters of intent from Malaysia to Jakarta for joint ventures in developing Indonesia's new capital Nusantara, Anwar shared his story when asked by local reporters on why he chose to come to the republic first.

Anwar said it was the fact that Indonesia remained close to him when he was removed from power more than two decades ago, that had the republic close to his heart.

Indonesia today, he said, remained his true friend, one whose kind gestures during those trying years he would never forsake.

"Indonesia is a true friend. At a time that I was tossed out and deserted, Indonesia stepped forward as a true friend. That I can never forget.

"That is why we prioritise our bilateral relations with Malaysia," said the prime minister.

Tomorrow, he is scheduled to meet Indonesian President Joko Widodo at Istana Bogor, where both leaders are expected to discuss issues of economic and bilateral cooperation.
