KUALA LUMPUR: Two new Dewan Rakyat deputy speakers were selected today.

They were Barisan Nasional's Cameron Highlands member of parliament Datuk Ramli Md Nor and Pakatan Harapan's Lanang MP Alice Lau.

This was announced by newly-elected Speaker Datuk Johari Abdul.

They were chosen through a secret ballot. Ramli secured 148 votes while Lau received 146 votes.

Earlier, Johari said three names were submitted for the posts, and MPs would have to do a secret ballot to choose two people.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (PH-Tambun) proposed Ramli and Lau.

His motion was seconded by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

Perikatan Nasional chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan proposed Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (PN-Masjid Tanah) for the post, and this was supported by Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim (PN- Kuala Terengganu).
