KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry is probing allegations of bullying in school which was raised by a student via a letter, which was subsequently shared on social media by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Education Minister, Fadhlina Sidek, said the ministry would not compromise on the issue and will conceal the identity of the student to protect the child's safety.

She also hoped that all quarters would create an environment which is free of racial elements both in school and at home.

Schools, she said, should by rights be a safe space for pupils, with a harmonious environment for all.

"In addition, we also hope that the teachers will set a good example for students in terms of leadership aspects as well as demonstrate care for their students.

"Given the political climate on social media, we must recognise the fact that children would be among those who would easily absorb all information they receive.

"As such, let's use this school holiday period as an opportunity to create an ecosystem which is harmonious and filled with mutual respect," she told Berita Harian.

The prime minister, earlier today, had urged the ministry to expedite its probe into alleged bullying cases in schools.

Anwar had shared a picture of a letter, believed to be penned by a bullying victim, who had asked for the issue to be addressed.

In the letter, the victim claimed to have been targeted by bullies but all complaints to teachers fell on deaf ears. The victim also claimed that the teachers were racist in attitude.

The student had appealed to the prime minister to swiftly address the issue and to ensure that such incidents are brought to an end.
