Bera: The statement made by the Group of 70 Malay professors (G70) endorsing PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as a candidate for Prime Minister does not reflect the support of academicians across the country.

Caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that G70 only represents a small number of professors in the country.

In fact, Ismail Sabri said the National Professors Council president Prof Datuk Dr Raduan Che Rose also denied that the statement represented them.

"l have been in contact with the President of MPN and he denied that the statement represented professors across the country.

"The G70 does not represent all professors and is aimed at misleading the people,' he said when met at the Keluarga Malaysia unity programme at Dataran Kerayong here today.

However, Ismail Sabri considered it as "normal" if not all professors support him as Prime Minister.

The G70 said it is endorsing Anwar as Prime Minister based on his credibility and excellent track record.

Its spokesman Professor Datuk Dr Ir Wan Ramli Wan Daud claimed Anwar is a figure with the authority and experience and integrity to lead a pluralistic society.

The G70 consists of academics and professionals, a large number of whom have retired to deal with the political crisis involving the country's Muslims.

In the meantime, Raduan criticised the actions of the G70 movement which still uses the title even though most of them have retired.

MPN also insisted that it was not directly or indirectly involved in the group's actions.
