LANGKAWI: Another 12 people were evacuated today as the number of flood victims in the island increased from 49 yesterday to 61 as of 8.30am today.

Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Langkawi District officer, Ahmad Shahfikri Darus said the latest victims were from Kampung Bohor Masjid who were evacuated after their homes were flooded following continuous rainfall.

"This brings the total flood evacuees taking shelter at the Dewan Syifa flood relief centre (PPS) in Padang Matsirat to 61 people from 17 families.

"All the evacuees are from Kampung Atas, Limbung Putra, Buluh Penyumpit, Bukit Kemboja and Bohor Masjid," he said when contacted here today.

On Sunday, Langkawi was hit by continuous heavy rainfall and strong winds which triggered floods, landslides and uprooted trees.

Shahfikri said there was slight rain in the island this morning and the weather is forecasted to improve in the afternoon.

He urged the public to contact the Langkawi District Operations Control Center at at 04-9611474 for floods emergency cases, uprooted trees and landslides.
