JOHOR BARU: Some 25 B40 families at the Iskandar PPR Flats here, got some early Deepavali cheer when Pulai Springs Resort staff dropped by with goodies.

The families received hampers filled with murukku, as well as household essentials such as rice, oil, eggs, flour, sugar, milk, margarine and cordial drinks.

The Deepavali goodies is part of Pulai Springs Resort's annual effort called Lighting Hearts, Lighting Lives, and included not only Hindu families but also other residents of the housing area.

The resort's general manager, Sunny Soo, said Deepavali -- which falls on Oct 24 -- was a victory of light over darkness "when we light their homes and hearts with goodness and generosity".

"We hope this will help ease some of the financial burdens for these families and make it a little better for them when they celebrate Deepavali," he said after distributing the hampers to recipients.

One recipient of the largesse was Saraswathy Chellappan, 72.

"It is a very nice gesture to invite all of us here for this event," the septuagenarian said.

"They are helping the elderly as well to get the extra essentials needed for Deepavali."

Suria Kumari, 66, said she could now have a meaningful Deepavali with the basic items given to her.

Another recipient, Alrajoo Rajoo, 68, said his wife died five years ago, rendering his family of two children fraught with hardship.

"I just underwent a knee replacement and am unable to work," he said, adding that the groceries from Pulai Springs Resort would make his family's Deepavali celebration a lot better.
