PUTRAJAYA: The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) will introduce the Unmanned Aircraft Traffic Management System (UATMS) to manage and monitor drone flight activities in the country.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the system was for recreational and commercial use of drone flights.

"The CAAM plans to amend the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016 to improve and support the drone industry to reach its full potential and further to a higher level.

"However, the proposed amendment is difficult to implement without an efficient and integrated online system. Hence, CAAM will introduce UATMS," he said in his speech to open a special media workshop on safe operations of drones at CAAM headquarters here today.

Present were Transport Ministry secretary-general Datuk Isham Ishak and CAAM chief executive officer Captain Datuk Chester Voo Chee Soon.

The workshop provided a detailed explanation of the current Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) and drone regulations, the latest updates on Malaysia's drone ecosystem and a step-by-step guide on the application process flow for Special UAS/Drone Project Approval dedicated to media organisations.

Voo said CAAM would continue to assist and provide guidance to any organisation to ensure that an application for drone operations meets all requirements and compliance with regulations.

"CAAM would like to remind all operators that drone activities in Malaysia are bound by the Civil Aviation Regulation 2016 Regulation 140-144 and three Civil Aviation Directives."
