GEORGE TOWN: Treasured Eurasian family recipes for delicacies ranging from debal curry, salted fish pickle, sugee cake and jam tarts are set to tantalise the tastebuds of those in Penang this Saturday.

The 2022 Penang Heritage Eurasian Fiesta will also showcase Penang Eurasian bands and musicians who have not been able to perform much over the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The event will be held at St Xavier's Institution, Lebuh Farquhar, here.

"We are back with a bang this year, while observing all Covid-19 health and safety protocols," Penang Eurasian Association president Datuk Aloysius Gasper told the New Straits Times.

"In order to keep everyone safe, the event will be held from 2pm to midnight so the public can stagger their attendance.

"Food will be sold outdoors and dining options will be available both indoors and outdoors and we encourage visitors to keep their face masks on when they are not consuming food," he added.

As a platform to promote local Eurasian staples and the community's home cooks, Gasper said that all transactions for food items and beverages on the day of the event will strictly be done by cash.

"Many of our vendors are home-based cooks and have not gone cashless in their transactions as yet," he said.

One of the highlights of the event is the Family Heritage Sugee Cake competition where recipes for sugee (or semolina) cakes which have been passed down from generation to generation in the Eurasian community, are put to the test.

"Entries will be judged on appearance, texture and taste," Gasper said.
