KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) will hold its triennial delegates conference (TDC) for two days, beginning tomorrow, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the guest of honour.

Its secretary-general Kamarul Baharin Mansor said the TDC's dates of July 2 to July 3 were approved by the majority of delegates at the congress general meeting on March 20 through a vote after a long and detailed discussion involving the MTUC constitution.

"The MTUC had met the Registrar of Societies (RoS) for advice over Abdul Halim Mansor's dispute with the TDC", he said.

Halim had filed an injunction to stop the current leadership from holding the meeting on Sunday.

It was learnt that the former MTUC President's lawyers filed the affidavit on Tuesday together with an emergency certificate and were expecting the court to decide today.

"The RoS has stated that the general meeting is the highest decision-making body to decide between the two TDC conferences."

"MTUC will continue with the conference as decided by the general meeting because we have yet to receive any court order that restricts the conference from proceeding," Kamarul said in a statement.

He said a notice on the TDC had been sent to all unions by e-mail on April 6 as per constitutional provisions which contain the dates for the submission of representation and delegate forms.

"The TDC will be attended by 115 unions comprising 509 delegates who will convene for the election of key officials, presentation of reports, accounts, motions and constitutional amendments.

"A special general meeting had discussed the preparations for the delegates' conference held on June 26 and rejected 12 unions to attend the TDC after missing the deadline to submit delegate forms," he said.

Among the posts to be contested are president, deputy president, secretary general and finance secretary.

"Those that disagree with the general meeting's decision will continue to stop the conference from proceeding, as has happened in the past."

"For the record, during the past election, there were groups who sought a court order to halt the election," he said, adding that MTUC will continue fulfilling its responsibility and act based on its constitution to ensure that MTUC remains respected.
