KUALA LUMPUR: Thousands of light rail transit (LRT) commuters were left stranded following a disruption to the rail service today.

The disruption occurred during rush hour around 5pm when city folk were returning home from work.

Some took to social media to vent their frustrations, with many stranded at stations due to the non-availability of trains.

LRT, via its social media account @AskRapidKL on Twitter said a train had malfunctioned at the KL Sentral LRT station.

The company said it was in the midst of handling the process of transporting the stranded commuters.

"Shuttle trains have been deployed from the Bangsar LRT station to the Pasar Seni station. Trains from Putra Heights will also return to the Bangsar LRT station, as will the train from Gombak to Pasar Seni.

"We are trying to resolve the issue and it will be completed within a few minutes. Thank you for your patience and we apologise for the convenience caused," it said.

In a separate tweet, @AskRapidKL, while advising people to find alternative modes of transportation, also said it would prepare free shuttle buses to those in need.

It said the buses WVE5821 and WUT8479 will be taking passengers to Bangsar LRT-KL Sentral LRT-Pasar Seni LRT while the WUW9720 bus will take the Pasar Seni LRT-KL Sentral route.
