TUARAN: The 2021 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination which started today in Sabah is progressing smoothly.

Sabah Education director Datuk Dr Mistirine Radin said there are a total 39,250 registered candidates at 315 examination centres in the state.

She said the candidates are from public schools, government aided schools and government aided religious schools totalling 35,266 candidates at 256 examination centres.

"There are 406 government agency school (MRSM) candidates and 227 state religious secondary school candidates at four examination centres each."

"Meanwhile, a total 1,215 candidates from private schools registered with the Ministry of Education (MOE) at 16 examination centres and 2,136 private candidates at 35 examination centres," she added.

Mistirine was met when inspecting the first day of the SPM examination at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tamparuli, here.

She added the department would also monitor all SPM candidates via Ops Payung in the event of any issues that may arise.

"(As for) candidates who have symptoms (Covid-19), they will be kept in another room and the next schedule to re-sit the examination will be informed later in April," she added.

Meanwhile, the Principal of SMK Tamparuli, Mozidah Hamzah said, there are three SPM candidates who tested positive for Covid-19 and would sit for the examination once they completed their quarantine.

"So far, all the candidates who are sitting for the exams in this school are in good health.

"All candidates, school staff and the examination management staff will undergo strict SOPs to ensure the examination runs smoothly until March 29."
