SETIU: Despite the respite in the weather, there was no easing of efforts by rescuers evacuating flood victims as volumes of water from upstream of major rivers flowed towards the sea.

As of 8pm, rescuers were still being kept busy mobilising assets to bring 14,393 people from 3,744 families to safety at 143 flood relief centres statewide.

Kemaman still had the most evacuees, affecting 4,404 people from 1,173 families who have sought shelter at 21 relief centres.

Here, 1,027 people from 302 families were evacuated to 26 relief centres.

In Dungun, 2,684 people from 789 families were evacuated to 29 relief centres while in Besut, there were 306 evacuees from 28 families.

Hulu Terengganu, which is the second worst hit district, registered 4,006 evacuees from 891 families who sought shelter at 22 relief centres.

In Kuala Terengganu, 648 people from 176 families were evacuated to nine relief centres while in Kuala Nerus, 394 people from 106 families were moved to seven relief centres.

The number of evacuees in Marang remained at five people from one family staying at a relief centre.

The state Disaster Management Committee secretariat, in updating the flood situation, said despite the increase in evacuees, the number of families affected by the flood had dropped slightly.

It said that except for Kuala Terengganu, the other seven districts are still experiencing rainfall.
