SETIU: The flood situation in Terengganu worsened with 2,563 evacuees involving 722 families seeking shelter at 51 relief centres following incessant heavy rain over the past 12 hours.

As of 8am, low-lying and flood-prone areas in five districts namely Kemaman, Setiu, Hulu Terengganu, Besut and Dungun have been inundated.

With the heavy rainfall showing no signs of abating, agencies involved in rescue operations are on high alert to help victims to safety.

Kemaman is the worst struck district with 1,244 flood victims from 340 families moved to 18 relief centres.

In Setiu, 234 people from 80 families were evacuated to seven relief centres and in Hulu Terengganu, 652 people from 197 families are now placed at 11 relief centres.

In Besut, 414 people from 94 families have been evacuated to 11 flood relief centres and in Dungun 69 people from 24 families are now housed temporarily at four centres.

State Disaster Management Committee secretariat in updating the flood situation said heavy rainfall across the state has not abated for several days.

It said all agencies involved in rescue operations are on high alert with assets ready to be mobilised to move victims to safety.
