KUALA LUMPUR: The Covid-19 virus claimed another 22 lives yesterday (Jan 20), increasing the nationwide death toll to 31,853.

According to data from the Health Ministry's CovidNow and Github, nine of the five deaths were brought-in-dead (BID) cases.

The fatalities were reported in Selangor with seven cases, Perak with three cases, two each in Negri Sembilan, Terengganu, Sabah and Johor, one each in Kedah, Pahang, Sarawak and Kelantan.

BID cases were reported in Johor, Kelantan, Negri Sembilan, Sabah and Selangor.

Meanwhile, in the past two weeks, five Covid-19 deaths were reported per million people in Malaysia, with Terengganu at the highest with 17 deaths.

Pahang reported 10 deaths per million people, while Melaka logged nine deaths per million people in the same period.

Malaysia reported 3,242 fresh cases yesterday, bringing the total number of infections since the pandemic hit the country to 2,806,460.

Currently, there are 41,617 active cases, after 3,254 recoveries reported yesterday.

As for hospital bed utilisation, four states reported utilisation above 70 per cent as of yesterday.

The highest bed usage is in Melaka with 83.6 per cent followed by Kedah at 77.8 per cent, Johor (76.5 per cent) and Terengganu (75.6 per cent).

Bed utilisation for Covid-19 patients in other states was between 21.7 and 67.7 per cent with the national average standing at 62.2 per cent.

In terms of intensive care unit (ICU) utilisation rates for Covid-19 cases, only Kuala Lumpur was recorded above the 80 per cent mark at 81.3 per cent.

The rate at other states was between 31.6 per cent and 68 per cent with the national average standing at 54 per cent.

A total 34,722 people are observing home quarantine, making up 83.4 per cent of the total active cases in the country.

Authorities recorded 9.7 per cent (4,048) patients being treated at Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centres (PKRC), 6.5 per cent (2,687) are hospitalised and the remaining 0.4 per cent are at intensive care units (ICU) with 86 unventilated and 76 ventilated.

On vaccinations, Malaysia logged 25,691,872 people or 78.7 per cent who have received the full dose of the Covid-19 vaccines, while 26,054,094 or 79.8 per cent are partially vaccinated.

The Health Ministry also reported that 10,235,759 booster shots have been administered so far.

Meanwhile, 88.3 per cent of adolescents have been fully vaccinated while 91 per cent have received one dose of the vaccine so far.

As for adults, 97.9 of them have been fully vaccinated with 99.1 receiving at least one dose so far.
