TUMPAT: Kelantan has allocated about RM140,000 to some 700 fishermen in the district badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 700 who were from Pengkalan Kubor state constituency, received RM200 each in three separate programmes held in the district today.

Pengkalan Kubor assemblyman Wan Roslan Wan Hamat who presented the one-off aid to the fisherman said the donation was aimed at reducing the burden faced by the community during the pandemic and also during the rainy season.

"Before this, the state government had given them various types of assistance including fishing equipment and other necessities.

"But of late, they are facing more financial problems and therefore, the state government decided to give them the one-off cash payment," he told reporters after handing over the financial aid to fishermen here.

Fisherman Mohd Jali Ismail thanked the state government for the donation, adding that it would benefit the fishermen.

"Many of us lost our income following the pandemic and now, the monsoon season is on and we cannot go out for fishing.

"The financial aid will help ease our burden a little," said the 63-year-old father of four.

Another fisherman Sabri Yah, 65, said he would use the money to buy daily essentials for his family.
