KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Melaka Umno chief Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh have been slapped with a RM10,000 compound each for violating Covid-19 prevention standard operating procedures (SOP).

In a statement, the Health Ministry said an investigation was conducted following a video that went viral on social media involving the two individuals.

"Investigation by the Health Ministry found there had been SOP violation during the Melaka election involving the two individuals on Nov 19 in Masjid Tanah."

This led to the ministry issuing the duo with a RM10,000 compound each under Rule 16 P.U(A) 293/2021 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within Infected Local Areas) (National Recovery Plan) Regulations 2021.

"The compounds were issued for violating the Covid-19 prevention SOP for the 15th Melaka state election which is conducting house visits and not wearing face masks," the ministry said.

It added that the SOP was issued on Nov 7 to ensure that everyone understood and would follow the rules put in place.

The SOP for the election was issued in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
