BUTTERWORTH: The Royal Malaysian Air Force has identified the pilots who were killed and injured when a Hawk 108 aircraft crashed at the airbase here last night.

The deceased has been identified as Captain Mohamad Affendi, while the injured was Major Mohd Fareez Omar.

RMAF, in a statement, said Fareez is being treated at the Seberang Jaya Hospital and reported to be in stable condition.

"As for Affendi, arrangements are being made to handle his remains.

"Both victims are married and their families have been alerted to the incident. RMAF will prioritise the families's welfare," it added.

RMAF said both Affendi and Fareez were undergoing night flying when the incident occured.

It said an investigation board would be set up to probe the incident.

At 10.07pm last night, a Hawk 108 aircraft crashed at the air base here.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein confirmed the incident on his Facebook page, while ordering a thorough probe on what happened.

He said he had been informed by RMAF chief General Tan Sri Ackbal Abdul Samad, adding that he was saddened by the incident.

"The RMAF has been ordered to give me a detailed report and investigate the cause of the incident."
