YAN: The six-year-old boy who was feared to have drowned after slipping into a river in Kampung Perupok here yesterday, was found this morning.

Yan police chief Deputy Superintendent Shahnaz Akhtar Haji said the body of Mohd Hafiz Izzan Awari was found on the riverbed near Kampung Setar, about 2km from the location he was believed to have slipped.

The remains were found by villagers who had joined the search and rescue party mounted by the authorities since yesterday evening.

"The body has been taken to Yan Hospital for identification and post-morterm," he told reporters at the scene.

The victim's parents Awari Md Daud, 34, and Faryhanun Mohd Sujak, 36, were seen weeping after the body was fished out from the river.

Mohd Hafiz was the third child of five.

It was reported that the victim was playing with his sister, aged 9, near the river yesterday before the girl headed back to their grandmother's home, leaving the boy alone.

His mother made a distress call about 6.45pm upon noticing the victim's disappearance, prompting a search and rescue party comprising the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force and Rela to be mobilised.
