GEORGE TOWN: Some 5,200 households in Balik Pulau are expected to experience low water pressure between 8am and 6pm this Monday, due to raw water pipeline connection works.

Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) chief executive officer Datuk Jaseni Maidinsa said the Sungai Pinang Water Treatment Plant (WTP) will be shut down for 10 hours to connect a new 300mm mild steel (MS) raw water pipeline at the Titi Kerawang raw water intake.

"PBAPP will lay a new pipeline at the Titi Kerawang raw water intake which supplies raw water to Sungai Pinang (WTP). This new 300mm MS pipeline will replace two damaged pipelines at the Titi Kerawang raw water intake.

"On Aug 20, this year, a 150mm and a 225mm pipeline at this intake were damaged by fallen boulders during a heavy storm. PBAPP had to lay a temporary emergency pipeline to maintain raw water supply to the Sungai Pinang WTP.

"All raw water pipe laying and repair works at the intake have been completed. Once PBAPP commissions the new 300mm pipeline, treated water production will be normalised at the Sungai Pinang WTP.

"However, the WTP must be shut down to facilitate final pipeline connection works. As such, PBAPP will shut down the Sungai Pinang WTP for 10 hours from 8am to 6pm on Monday. During the shutdown, PBAPP will supply treated water to Balik Pulau from two other facilities -- the Batu Ferringhi WTP, via the Teluk Bahang pumping station and the Genting Reservoir via the Teluk Kumbar pumping station," he said today.

PBAPP foresees that the Sungai Pinang WTP shutdown will cause 5,200 households to experience low water pressure.

Domestic and trade water consumers in Jalan Pantai Acheh, Jalan Permatang Pasir, Jalan Sungai Pinang, Jalan Baru/Bharu, Jalan Kuala Sungai Pinang, Jalan Kuala Jalan Baru, Jalan Sungai Rusa, Bukit Penara and Jalan Sungai Air Putih (Bandar Baru Air Putih) are expected to be affected.

"PBAPP regrets any inconvenience caused. Once this new pipeline is commissioned, the Sungai Pinang WTP will recommence treated water production at optimal capacity to meet water supply needs of consumers in Balik Pulau," he added.
