KUALA LUMPUR: The country has registered 5,516 new Covid-19 infections along with four new clusters over the past 24 hours.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the total, only 14 were imported cases while the rest (5,502 cases) originated from local transmissions.

The bulk of new infections or 5,414 cases (98.2 per cent), he said, comprised Category One and Two infections who were either asymptomatic or displayed mild symptoms.

The remaining 102 cases (1.8 per cent), he said, were recorded in Categories Three, Four and Five.

Dr Noor Hisham said some 669 patients currently require treatment at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) wards, including 333 patients that require ventilator support.

Three out of the four new clusters that were identified today were workplace clusters, namely the Industri Jalan KPB Tujuh and the Industri Jalan P/1 clusters in Selangor as well as the Lorong Jelawat Satu cluster in Penang.

The fourth cluster was an education cluster that was identified in Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur.

Dr Noor Hisham said, as of Wednesday, Putrajaya and Negri Sembilan recorded the highest infectivity rate (Rt) in the country at 1.03.

The national average, he said, stood at 0.88.

On a brighter note, Dr Noor Hisham said 9,401 people had recovered from their Covid-19 infections today.
