KUCHING: The appointment of Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the new prime minister will bring a new lease of life for the country's administration.

A Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) youth leader also believed that Ismail Sabri's appoinment as the ninth prime minister will further strengthen the cooperation and ties between the administration at the federal level and the Sarawak government.

PBB Youth chief Gerald Rentap Jabu said the party fully supports the move and decision adopted by the state's rulling coalition, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg in stabilising the country's political landscape.

"We hope Datuk Ismail Sabri will be given the chance and opportunity to formulate and implement policies to address the economic and health crises brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"This is for the sake of restoring the economy of the nation subsequently helping to protect the wellbeing of the people," he said in a statement today.

Rentap, who is also Layar assemblyman, stressed that the state's administration under GPS was not affected by the constitutional crisis at the federal level.

At the same, he said the Sarawak government will focus on efforts aiming at flattening the Covid-19 transmission curve as well as realising the targets outlined under the Sarawak Economic Recovery Plan.

PBB Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar hoped all parties could provide undivided support especially towards the formation of the new cabinet and stand firmly behind Ismail Sabri as the country's new leader.

Wan Junaidi, who is also Santubong member of parliament, also called on all parties to accept the appointment of Ismail Sabri as announced by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

"We should give our full support to the prime minister in the effort to resolve the pandemic-induced crises," he said.

PBB Information Chief Datuk Idris Buang described Ismail Sabri's appointment as the right choice.

"He did not only obtain the majority support from members in the Dewan Rakyat but also was the most senior since he was previously the deputy prime minister and senior defence minister.

"He has vast experience in serving the people and in the professional field as a lawyer.

"To lead the government at a time when the country is still battling the pandemic is a challenging task," he said.
