KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded its highest daily cases today with 20,596 new infections over the past 24 hours.

This is the first-time that daily Covid-19 cases breached the 20,000 mark, bringing the cumulative total cases to 1,203,706 where 217,061 are active cases.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the new cases, 34 were imported involving seven Malaysians and 27 non-citizens.

He said Selangor remained as the state with the highest number of cases with 8,549, followed by Kuala Lumpur (2,163) and Kedah (1,442).

Other states with four-digit cases are Johor with 1,300, Sabah (1,062) and Penang (1,022).

Negri Sembilan logged 989 cases. Other states are Perak (916), Kelantan (772), Sarawak (759), Melaka (622), Terengganu (501), Pahang (426), Putrajaya (50), Labuan (15) and Perlis (four).

"Of the new infections, 398 cases (1.9 per cent) were those under category 3,4 and 5 while the remaining 20,198 were under category 1 and 2.

"Only 4,660 cases (22.6 per cent) have received the vaccination," he said.

With 164 fatalities due to Covid-19 are recorded as of noon today, this brings the cumulative total of deaths to 10,019.

"Forty-five deaths were reported in Selangor, with Johor (27), Kuala Lumpur (24), Kedah (18), Perak (10), Sabah, Penang and Melaka (nine each), Negri Sembilan (seven), Sarawak and Pahang (two), Kelantan and Terengganu (one each).

"Most of the victims involving 127 of them had underlying medical conditions and 22 were brought-in-dead," he said in a statement today.

At the same time, 13,893 recoveries are recorded today, bringing the total number of recoveries to 976,626 (81.1 per cent).

Dr Noor Hisham said 1,078 patients were currently receiving treatment at the intensive care unit where 549 were on ventilator support.

As of Aug 4, the nation infectivity rate, Rt stood at 1.07. Kelantan has the highest Rt at 1.31, followed by Terengganu (1.26), and Perak (1.22). Rt at other states are higher than 1.0 except Negri Sembilan, Perlis and Labuan.

Meanwhile, 33 new clusters were identified nationwide, said Dr Noor Hisham, adding the clusters contributed to 1,234 cases so far. More than half of the new clusters were workplace-related.

The 17 new workplace clusters were eight in Selangor (Warisan Tropika construction site, Industri Teratai Lapan, Jalan Batu Caves, Industri Jalan Aman, Industri Persiaran Kuala Langat, Jalan Dagang Mas and Tapak Bina Jalan Perigi Lapan), four in Johor (Industri Simpang Baba, Industri Jalan Nanas Tiga, Perindustrian Sri Pletong 2 and Industri Mega Satu), three in Melaka (Industri Lot 26, Jalan Debunga Satu and Industri Plot Lapan), two in Kelantan (Jalan Bukit Lata and Kuala Balah Jeli) and each in Penang (Solok Perusahaan Tiga) and Putrajaya (Presint Tujuh 2 construction site).

Out of the 12 community clusters, six are in Kelantan (Kampung Tok Jawa Tawang, Batu Balai Kuala Krai, Jalan Masjid Kok Lanas, Chiku Gua Musang, Kampung Takang, and Padang Chenok Salor), four in Sarawak (Kampung Bintawa Ulu, Kampung Sebat Melayu, Kampung Semban and Nanga Serenggas), each in Kedah (Dah Kampung Chichak) and Negri Sembilan (Guntur).

Two detention centre clusters were reported in Langkawi, Kedah (Dah Pagar Kuah) and Kinta, Perak (Tembok Bendera 2). The only high-risk group cluster is Bukit Palah 2 in Melaka.
