KERIAN: Police have opened an investigation paper on an organiser who gave away tonnes of free durians in a drive-through distribution for failing to observe the standard operating procedures (SOP).

District police chief Superintendent Mazuki Mat said police have instructed the organiser to immediately stop giving out the durians due to the large crowd yesterday.

Police received a tip-off on the matter at 4pm yesterday. It was regarding the distribution of free durians under a bridge in Jalan Temenggong-Jalan Sekolah in Parit Buntar.

"A police team from Parit Buntar, here was dispatched to the place and they found many people waiting in line and failed to observe physical distancing.

"We instructed them to disperse and the organiser to stop giving away the durians. Following this, a police report was lodged and an investigation paper was opened," Mazuki said in a statement today.

Pictures of people queueing up to get the durians went viral on social media with some seen waiting in long lines in front of a durian-laden lorry with no physical distancing.

Mazuki added that people are advised to follow the SOP set by the government to break the chain of Covid-19 infection in the country.

The case is being investigated under Section 269 of the Penal Code for a negligent act likely to spread infection of any disease dangerous to life.
