KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah and Sarawak Affairs Division (BHESS) and Sabah Law Society (SLS) will be developing a module on the historical context and legal aspects of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

The module will allow the public, especially the younger generation, to understand its importance in the formation of Malaysia.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs) Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said such a module could be standard material for schools and public engagements.

"We want to share with the people, from school children to the elderly, to understand MA63, its history and contents, its inter-linkages, interpretations, and legal aspects.

"Who better to do this with than some 800 law experts from SLS, our very own powerhouse of intellectuals," he said in a statement.

Earlier today, Ongkili received a courtesy call from the society led by president Roger Chin at the BHESS office here.

Acknowledging SLS's commitment, Ongkili added they were also offering their advisory services and research for free, in addition to the existing data collected by BHESS.

"During our meeting, we realised the importance of getting the right foundation so that the young people, especially, will know and understand the real history and content of the MA63.

"There are a lot of interpretations on MA63 out there, and we hope this module will set the record right. We want to prevent the public from being misled from the true reflection of the historical agreement," he said.

Ongkili added that SLS has also requested to be part of the consultation committee on the equal status and high courts matters, under the Special Council of MA63's Equal Status Working Committee.

The committee is chaired by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Parliament) Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.

"They (SLS) would be a good addition, especially in getting their views on the two issues," said Ongkili.
