KOTA KINABALU: A new Covid-19 community cluster has emerged in Sabah, recording 21 infections thus far.

The cluster dubbed Kampung Bergosong originated in Tawau and is linked to a housewife who attended a 'kenduri tahlil' on April 8.

The woman became the cluster's index case after she was found positive through a symptomatic screening on April 13.

State Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said close contact screening found eight other positive cases, including among family members of the index case.

"The Kampung Bergosong cluster is a community and workplace type of cluster. The index case is believed to have been infected when attending a 'kenduri tahlil'.

"Screening is also being carried out at Ladang Prosperous in the village after one of the close contacts was found positive.

"The individual is a worker in that plantation. Until today, the cluster has 21 cases and contact tracing is ongoing," he said.

Today, Sabah registered 89 new infections, with Tawau having the highest number of cases at 30 followed by Lahad Datu (13) and Kota Kinabalu (12).

Other districts recording new cases are Kalabakan (9), Kinabatangan (8), Sandakan (5), Kunak (4), Penampang (3), Semporna (3), Nabawan (1), and Papar (1).
