SETIU: More people were being evacuated due to the floods in Terengganu and Kelantan this morning.

In TERENGGANU, flood victims rose sharply overnight as continuous rain and high tides led to the inundation of low-lying areas in five districts.

As at 8am, 5,243 people from 1,326 families have been evacuated to 39 flood relief centres.

In Kemaman, 4,074 people from 988 families are now at 21 flood relief centres.

In Dungun, 849 people from 244 families have moved to nine relief centres while in Hulu Terengganu 219 people from 67 families were evacuated to six relief centres.

In Besut, 94 people from 23 families have sought shelter at two centres while in Setiu, seven people from four families have moved to one centre.

Terengganu disaster management committee secretariat Chief Lieutenant Colonel (PA) Che Adam A Rahman said continuous heavy rains were recorded in the interior.

"The high tide phenomenon compounded by the heavy rain led to flooding in low-lying areas.

"Several rivers in the affected areas have also burst their banks. We are monitoring the situation and will evacuated those affected to relief centres," he added.

Meanwhile in KELANTAN, A total of 5,502 victims have been evacuated to 72 flood relief centres in five districts of the state.

According to the Welfare Department's portal, the evacuees from 1,512 families, were seeking shelter at the centres since early this week.

They came from flood-affected districts such as Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, Kuala Krai, Gua Musang and Jeli.

As at 9am today, Kuala Krai recorded the highest number of victims at 2,057, followed by Jeli (1,524) and Pasir Mas (691).

The portal stated that two main rivers in the state remained above their danger marks as at 9am.

One of them was Kelantan river in Machang, Kuala Krai, Tanah Merah and Kota Baru. The other river was Golok river in Rantau Panjang.

The portal also stated that four rivers exceeded their warning levels at 9am today.

Checks at the Sultan's Pier in Kota Baru showed that the Kelantan river had breached its banks flooding several low-lying areas nearby.
