SETIU: Floods in Terengganu have forced 1,693 people from 269 families to evacuate their homes as heavy rain continues.

Three districts were affected with Kemaman recording a sharp increase in the number of evacuees at 1,386.

Those seeking shelter in Kemaman are from 175 families now placed at nine relief centres.

In Dungun, 247 people from 78 families have been evacuated to three flood relief centres.

In Hulu Terengganu, 60 people from 16 families have sought shelter at one relief centre.

Terengganu disaster management committee secretariat Chief Lieutenant Colonel (PA) Che Adam A Rahman said 13 relief centres have been opened and the number of families affected increased to 269 from 238 earlier today.

He said non-stop heavy rain was registered in the interior and water was expected to flow downstream in major rivers later today.

"We expect more people to be evacuated later today but rescuers are ready to assist in evacuating flood victims," he said.

He advised those in affected areas to follow instructions given by rescuers to avoid untoward incidents.
