PITAS: A senior citizen suffered burns to his body in a fire at a block of three houses and a grocery store at Kampung Ferry here, today.

Abu Bakar Hassan, 75, was rescued by family members and villagers in the 4.30am incident.

Kota Marudu district Fire and Rescue station chief Rony Sikawan said the department received a distress call at 4.36am and deployed eight firefighters to the scene.

"Upon arrival, the firefighters found a block of houses and a Perodua Kancil completely on fire. Fortunately, no victims were reported trapped.

"Five occupants managed to escape the blaze. One of them was injured and was sent to Pitas hospital before the arrival of the firefighters," he said.

Rony said the Fire and Rescue team brought the blaze under control at 5.30am.

"The fire was fully doused at 6.53am. Our team is still investigating the cause," he said.
