SETIU: High tide and rough seas lashing coastal areas in Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Nerus and Dungun are eroding some stretches along the beach and depositing debris which have obstructed traffic flow.

The high tide phenomenon occured about an hour earlier and caught motorists unaware as the rough waves washed ashore, with strong winds causing trouble for some vehicles.

The Corniche road in Seberang Takir leading to the drawbridge was seriously affected by the impact of the rising tide.

As it subsided about an hour before midnight, it left a trail of debris along a two-kilometre stretch on the road.

At an already eroded stretch at Mengabang Telipot in Kuala Nerus, the situation worsened during the high tide.

Terengganu disaster management committee secretariat Chief Lieutenant Colonel (PA) Che Adam A Rahman said his men were kept busy re-directing traffic to safer routes and closing some roads affected by the high tide and rough seas.

"It is not safe to be around these affected areas. The public should refrain from becoming spectators to this dangerous situation.

"The high tide phenomenon is expected to take place over a couple of days. We advise travellers to avoid the affected areas," he said.

Asmat Muhammad, 36, of Telaga Daing said the strong winds rattled the metal awnings of her house.

"I can hear the waves breaking against the granite boulders along the Corniche road which is just about 300 metres from my house.

"It is a scary experience," she added.
