SETIU: Up to 6,305 people from 1,663 families were evacuated from their inundated homes as flooding in Terengganu deteriorated overnight.

Kemaman recorded the highest number of evacuees at 5,108 as of 8am today.

The flood victims, from 1,238 families, are taking shelter at 25 relief centres in the district.

In Dungun, 381 people from 104 families were evacuated to 10 relief centres; while in Setiu, 11 people from three families are taking shelter at one centre.

In Hulu Terengganu, 805 people from 318 families were moved to 13 flood relief centres.

State Civil Defence Force director Lt- Col (PA) Che Adam Abdul Rahman said continuous heavy rain led to the flooding of low lying areas, despite upstream water levels of major rivers having receded.

"We expect more people in low-lying areas to be evacuated. All agencies involved in rescue operations are on site to save flood victims," he said.
