SETIU: Within mere hours, the number of flood victims in Terengganu who had to be evacuated from their homes rose to 1,139 people from 972 reported at 4pm today.

Kemaman registered 978 evacuees from 238 families who are now seeking shelter at 11 relief centres.

In Dungun, the number of flood evacuees increased to 161 people from 51 families. They are now staying at three relief centres.

State Civil Defence Force director Lt-Col (PA) Che Adam Abdul Rahman said heavy rain was also reported in other districts, which could lead to more relief centres being opened.

"We are monitoring the situation closely. My men are on standby to help those affected to evacuate their homes," he said.

Terengganu has been hit by floods following incessant rainfall over the last 48 hours.

The authorities said heavy rain in the interior has flooded low-lying areas along major rivers in the districts. They are also bracing for more evacuations following a forecast by the Meteorological Department that heavy rain is expected to continue until tomorrow.
